Residences

The Vision of Schott Communities speaks of the establishment of a small residential community for persons who are deaf or disabled on the land acquired through donation and purchase by the organization.  The 27 acre property is spacious, graced with open fields and small lakes – ideal for such a community.

In 1995 the Board of Directors for Schott Communities decided to bring the vision of such a community into reality.  They believed the property offered a beautiful and healthy location to build housing for the disabled.  In contrast to old residences in the heart of decaying, often unsafe, cities, the Schott property is safe, semi-rural and lovely.  An architect was hired and the vision was captured on paper.

In 1999 construction began and by 2000 two residences were completed.  They were dedicated by Archbishop Favalora, of the Archdiocese of Miami, in August of 2000.

One residence, Schott Group Home, is home to six developmentally disabled women.  Each woman has her own room and bath; the communal areas are large and tastefully decorated.  The women have space outside the home to enjoy activities like biking, barbequing and gardening.

The second residence is a complex of six apartments for persons who are deaf or disabled yet capable of independent living.  Two apartments are for small families; four are single dwellings.  Several occupants are deaf; one is legally blind and another developmentally disabled.  Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen as well as a washer and dryer.  Each also has its own outside patio.  The apartments meet ADA requirements to support independent living for the deaf or disabled.

In addition to the construction of two residences, 8 pods for additional group homes and 4 pods for apartment complexes were laid in 1999; today water, gas, and electrical lines lie waiting for further construction – a substantial investment untapped.  The vision is only partially realized, but Schott Communities is committed to its full realization in the future, one residence at a time!
